Project Abstract
Virtual reality gaming is trending in the industry, yet there is not a satisfying open world virtual reality game available to the general public.
The development team (the Team) aims to develop an open world role playing game specifically designed for virtual reality experience. In addition to the game, the Team will develop an affordable and light-weight solution to virtual reality locomotion for the general public.
Project Development
Due to the limited time available for development, the Project will take the Agile development methodology. Agile methodology value small steps in production, and rapid changing environment and requirements. With a small team of developers, agile methodology can sustain through critical and potentially high impact changes, as well as enable constant evaluation of user requirements and project objectives.
Game Development
Based on the past experience of the Team, the Unity 3D game engine will be chosen as the major development platform.
The Team will first identify the permitted movements inside the game, and derive the logical restrictions to be implemented. After control mechanics are established, the key elements of the game will be identified, for instance: tutorial, story propagation mechanics, tasks. Details of the elements have to be drafted before progressing to the next stage.
The game story itself will be then written, using the mechanics, key elements, and the conception of the game world as background information. Graphic design and character design can be involved at this phase.
At the end of the above planning and design phase, a full review must be carried out to ensure the progress. Semi-reviews are encouraged during the phase to lower the risk of being out of scope and falling behind schedule.
The development phase will start right after the planning and design phase. The game will be divided into modules and developed accordingly. The modules should be of the scale suitable for one to two developers. Function descriptions are to be highly valued and monitored to lower the risk in the implementation phase. Individual testing shall be carried out for each completed modules and their related modules.
The product will be tested in the ways listed in part Quality Assurance.
Sensor Kit Development
The Team will investigate the typical gaming environment in Hong Kong families using questionnaires and interviews, and thus deriving the restrictions and requirements for the sensor kit.
Development kits will be accessed for their capability against user requirements. Once development kits are selected, adapter to translate the input to the game shall be developed.
Platform Development
Similar to sensor kit, the platform will be developed after collecting restrictions and requirements.
The floor of the platform will be selected by testing the slipperiness of the candidate materials. The test will be carried by using a belt to station a person above the floor and test if the material is too hard to stand on or to slippery to balance while moving.
The rig that constrain the player will then prototyped such that it will not obstruct the movement of the user, yet still providing enough support to not yet the player fell to the floor if the player slipped.
Quality Assurance
Firstly, testers will be recruited in three criteria, namely non-gamers, gamers with VR experience and gamers without VR experience.
Secondly, several test cases will be conducted, which are designed to test the safety of the platform and the detection ability of the sensor. A final play test session will be conducted for the testers to play the game freely.
Lastly, participants will be given a questionnaire to evaluate the game, focusing on the locomotion experience and the game design.
