Supervisors: Dr. C.L. WANG

I look for research students who are interested in these projects. If you are interested in one of the projects, please contact me at clwang@cs.hku.hk. Interview will be arranged for qualified students in early March 2008 or earlier (by special appointment).

1.

JESSICA3: A Distributed Java Virtual Machine with Thread Migration and Large Object Space

No. of students expected: 1-2 (Ph.D preferred)
  Project URL: http://www.cs.hku.hk/~clwang/projects/JESSICA2.html
  Current focus:
  1. Fine-grained object sharing problems in JESSICA3
  2. Object pre-fetching algorithms and new thread migration strategies for JESSICA3
Pre-requisties: good in Java Virtual Machine, Java compiler, JVMTI, software distributed shared memory (DSM); or interest in software transactional memory, cluster file system, socket migration

2

CNGrid-II: The HKU Grid Point (2006-2010, China 863 Project)

No. of students expected: 1-2 (Ph.D preferred)
Grid System:
  • 扩大和升级香港大学网格结点的资源
  • 实现自适应的Java计算环境 (1 student: good in Java Virtual Machine, Java compiler, JVMTI. We support Java process migration on Grid for efficient resource usage and fault tolerance. The students need strong theoretical background in parallel task scheduling or dynamic load balancing.)
  • 基于SLIM-VM 的网格部署方案 (1 student: good in virtual machines design, such as Xen, VMWare.. All these are related to "virtualization techniques". This research is quite low level. Students require solid background in Linux kernel or embedded OS.)
  • 普适化智能网格接入 (resource-aware mobile grid connection)

Grid Applications
  • 基于Tomcat的商业Web应用 : Porting Tomcat on JESSICA3 (previous project).
  • AlphaMiner (智能商业数据挖掘) : Porting AlphaMinor on JESSICA3
  • 物理网格(Physics Grid): Constructing HKU campus phy-grid using gLite
  • 风格化油画生成(“我是大画家”): Construction a rendering grid.
Pre-requisties: Some experiences in China Grid or China National Grid
Project URL: http://i.cs.hku.hk/~clwang/grid/CNGrid-II.html
3.

Component-based Context-aware Software Architecture for Pervasive Computing

No. of students expected: 1-2 (M.Phil or Ph.D)
Part I: Sparkle Pervasive Computing Middleware
Project URL: http://www.cs.hku.hk/~clwang/projects/sparkle.html
Pre-requisties: Mobile code technologies, dynamic composition and adaptation techniques (such as aspect-oriented programming)
  Part II: Smart Instant Messenger
Project URL: http://i.cs.hku.hk/~clwang/projects/SIM.htm
Pre-requisties: Good if you have some cognitive science background (e.g., activity theory, mental model) and proficient in ontology modeling.
4 Other research areas:
  • IP Mobility : mSCTP-based Handoff protocol.
  • Peer-to-peer files sharing systems.
  • Computational Art (High-Performance, allow scene changed according to human mood). Required some computer graphics background, but more on 'context-awareness" and high-performance computing. (This is a new area !)
