At the turn of the Millennium,
the supercomputing and high performance computing
industry has witnessed its fastest growth
worldwide. Computing platforms of multi-Gflops
are built to support a wide range of scientific
and engineering computations. Hong Kong is
also proactively responding to this new epoch.
More HPC platforms have been and will be
installed in Hong Kong. In the private sector,
financial institutions are using computer
clusters for data-mining and simulations.
Academics at universities are using computer
clusters to run very large scale simulations
in their research projects in computational
science and engineering. The government departments
(Hong Kong Observatory, Environmental Protection
Department, and the Hong Kong Police Departments, … etc.)
also have procured and started utilizing
supercomputers and/or computer clusters to
satisfy the ever growing demand of computation
power. The application domain of supercomputers
and high performance computing platforms
in Hong Kong is proliferating at all dimensions – research
and development, weather forecast, crime
analysis, forensic sciences, data-mining,
scientific/engineering simulations, environmental
protection and sustainable development, digital
entertainment and multimedia production etc.
To make way for the further
development of the supercomputing industry/market,
an overall perspective of the current status
is of vital importance. The Hong Kong Supercomputing
Directory will provide such meaningful and
timely information on HPC and supercomputing
usage.
