In 1993-94, Ben Hollingsworth and Jeremy Bettis took
first again in the North Central region (Macalester finished
second). Trent Bills joined us for the internationals in Phoenix,
where solved only 2 problems and placed 31st out of 35 teams, while
Macalester finished 14th with 4 problems. We had fun, though. We
spent nearly 6 hours a day in bars, most of it in a sports bar known
as "Phoenix Live." We'd made friends with the guys from Waterloo and
tried to get them to go out with us the night before the contest.
They opted not to go, and were rewarded for their better judgment by
taking first place with 6 problems.
In 1994-95, Ben Hollingsworth, Sam Tetherow, and
Mike Haller struggled a little in the regionals and only managed to
place second, this time behind Macalester. Coe took third place and
also joined us at the internationals. The internationals were held
in Nashville on 1 March 95. Our hope was that since this was our
third straight year at internationals, we would start to develop some
kind of reputation, either as a good programming school or as a good
party school. I think we succeeded at the latter. While our distant
proximity from downtown Nashville (where all the good bars are)
reduced the amount of time we could spend in the bars, it certainly
didn't eliminate it.
The contest itself didn't go much better than last year. We (Mike Haller) only managed to finish a single problem out of eight possible, but we still placed 29th out of 38 teams. Freiburg from Germany took first place, narrowly edging out Cal Berkeley. Waterloo, last year's winner, took 10th. Click here to see the official results.
