Introduction

The "Musical Instrument Design Competition" is organized by Faculty of Engineering, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and Arts and Technology Education Centre (ATEC).

Objectives

Through organizing the competition, the project's aims are:

Eligibility and Categories

All primary and secondary school students of Hong Kong are welcome to take part in the competition. Teams fall into either of the two categories: Primary School and Secondary School. A team should comprise 1 to 2 teacher advisor(s) and a maximum of 5 students. A student can participate in only one team, while a teacher can be an advisor of more than one team. At most three teams can come from each school. Each team is required to submit one set of deliverables as follows:

Requirements

Reqt. Description
R-01 The piece of work should be capable of producing sound, and used as a musical instrument. There is no restriction on the choices of materials for the instrument. The cost for the design and fabrication of the instrument, excluding desktop/notebook computers, tablets or mobile phone, should be less than HKD 2000. There will be no subsidy from organisers for implementing the instrument.
R-02 The report should be concise, with a length of no more than 10 A4 pages (cover page excluded, diagrams included), and in PDF format.
R-03 Digital photos of the instrument should be delivered (in zip format) together with the report.
R-04 Report and photos should be submitted through a specific submission website. Late submissions will not be entertained.
R-05 Each team is required to give a live performance using the implemented musical instrument. The length of the performance should be no more than 90 seconds. The performance can include other musical instruments. The piece can be original, an existing musical piece, or a variation of it. The title and length of the piece should be submitted to the organiser before a deadline specified by the organisers.
R-06 Each team is required to attend the event "Concert and Project Exhibition". Judging will be done during the Concert and the Exhibition. In the whole period of Exhibition, at least one student team member (i.e., not counting teacher advisor(s)) must be present. Team members are expected to answer questions raised by the judges and visitors. Details or the arrangement will be provided a week before the performance and exhibition.

Workshops and activities

Registered participants are eligible for attending workshops and visits organized by the HKU Faculty of Engineering and Arts & Technology Education Centre. A tentative schedule of the activities, with highlighted important dates, is tabled at the Schedule page. Attendance certificates will be issued to registered team members and teacher advisors who participated in activities and attended both the Concert and Project Exhibition with their musical instruments.

Conditions

  1. The organizer reserves the right to disqualify entries and reclaim prizes awarded should the entries be found to have violated any Requirement, copyright or Hong Kong Laws.
  2. Decisions of the Judging Panel are final.
  3. Participants accept that their prize-winning entries may be released or published in media designated by the organizer.
  4. Acknowledgment of the receipt of the submitted report and photos will be sent via email within one week of the receipt. Enquiries can be made by email in the Enquiries page.

Registration

Registration should be completed on or before 2018-10-22[Mon]. Participants can register online. Late registration will not be entertained.

Judging Criteria

The judging panel consists of professionals from HKU Faculty of Engineering, Arts and Technology Education Centre, and the media/music industry. The judging criteria are as follows:

Concert, Exhibition, Results and Award Presentation

All participating teams are required to attend the Concert and Project Exhibition, tentatively scheduled on 2019-05-11[Sat]. The team is required to perform on stage with their implemented musical instrument. The team is then required to present and demonstrate their work during the Exhibition after the Concert. Judging will be done during both the Concert in the morning and the Exhibition. The results of the competition will be announced in the afternoon, and awards will then be presented. The event will be open to the public. All visitors can vote for the "My Favourite Musical Instrument" Award. All participants are also required to vote for the "Participants' Favourite Musical Instrument" Award winner. Parents, teachers and students are welcome. Details of the event will be announced at least one week before the event.
